Taking It Easy:

Sunday, July 6, 2008

...Mmmm... This is ALL my 4th of July consisted of. Grilling burgers with my folks, sitting around our yard just enjoying not doing anything else... Relaxing!

We didn't even mess with plans to watch any fireworks displays-- Just didn't even worry about how to work that out with a baby that goes to bed at 7 p.m. We figure we've seen plenty of fireworks in our lives, and Noah has the rest of his life to experience them, so no one was truly missing out this year. It was a refreshingly low-key decision.
And the burgers were DELICIOUS. First time in a long time I've had burgers cooked over charcoal. Yum!!! For dessert (sorry, no photos), I made Pioneer Woman's Mountain Dew Apple Dumplings, (which sound crazy but are AMAZING) and we all took turns talking to Beckie on the phone on her 5th of July in Iraq. (Soooo good to hear her voice. ALMOST made me forget she's so far away. Almost.)

The next day, I had an early photo shoot, but then got to spend the rest of the morning napping, hanging out with my parents and kid sister, and most important of all, initiating them into the TED DREWES CLUB.

If you have never been to St. Louis, you're missing out on one of its most famous traditions-- the Ted Drewes Frozen Custard Stand. Sure, STL has a ton of other traditions, including toasted ravioli, the Cardinals, the Arch, etc., but on a hot summer day, nothing else replaces the taste of Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. Just ask Noah:

... Just kidding. he is WAYYY too young to be eating all that cow's milk/eggs/sugar..... And Grandpa dutifully kept it away from the frustrated little guy.

So Noah had to spend his time charming the other customers while we indulged in our various combinations of flavors. (I had mint caramel brownie. Joe had raspberry fudge macadamia nut.)

Here, he is determinedly looking at MY Ted Drewes, which I am determinedly holding away from his persistent hands. Hey- We're BOTH stubborn. Let's see who wins. Oh yeah-- ME, nearly every time.

So... That was my holiday weekend. How was yours?

  7. My friend was JUST telling me about Ted Drewes. She couldn't believe we hadn't been there. I love your pictures. And your writing. And your little guy. I love it all. So glad you had a laid back 4th of July. Hey! We met one year ago when we came down with Melody. Well, Emily, Happy Anniversary :) Ha ha.

  8. It was a refreshingly low-key decision.

I had to quote you: you are my inspiration to finding and using descriptive language...ah, if only my brain was as smarrrrt as yours!

we didn't go anywhere either, except we have people shooting them off in our neighborhood so we camped out in the driveway while drew slept!!! major score! lol

  9. I made a lot of money in the morning, which will now pay for the speeding ticket I got in the afternoon as I headed to Juli and Crawfordsville for yummy ice cream and fantastic fireworks in the evening before driving back home to Indy late at night.

(and however sad it may be that as many times as I have been to St. Louis in my life, I have yet to try Ted Drews, I plan to rectify that when I return to MO for a couple of weeks later this month- let me know when you're free and I will fit it into my schedule!)

  10. Emily, as I live and breathe, how in the heck are you??? I don't exactly remember how I ran into your blog, it's been a couple of weeks since I found this, but I finally found a moment to say hi.

I remember hearing about frozen custard in STL on the first Alton Brown "Feasting on Asphalt". I've been intrigued ever since.

Just thought I'd say hi and glad to see you're doing well.

  11. So glad to hear you had a fabulous weekend. Relaxing is always nice.
Good for you for keeping baby on a healthy diet, it's so easy to slip up. I didn't feed Gracie solids until she was 8 1/2 months. I'll tell you it was really nice.
I can't believe your family has lived in Missouri all this time and never experienced Ted Drewes. It's amazing and I'm jealous you have it so near. yum.

  12. I'm not sure whether to thank you for sharing or curse you for rubbing it in that we could't be there in person...

Seriously, I'm glad you had a low key weekend after the craziness of this summer so far.

Give Noah loves from his Aunt Juli.

  13. We did the BBQ thing as well, but instead of low-key, we squished in a bunch of other stuff as well...sigh...
We have frozen custard here to, Nielson's I think it's called in Bountiful. Very good.

  14. You know, I only had Ted D's for the first time a week before I left. Now I'm in the land where custard doesn't exist, and animals undergo a special prayer session before we feast on them. I think St. Louis wins this one...
Love the pictures. I almost licked my screen.
