Friday Morning: Soulard Farmer's Market

Friday, August 8, 2008

This morning, we took Noah to the Soulard Farmer's Market in the old, riverfront area of St. Louis. This is, hands down, one of my FAVORITE places in St. Louis. The market has been in existence since the late 1700's, and is full of color, hustle and bustle, every kind of person imaginable... and yummy, well-priced fresh produce!
Though we haven't been back here since last year, I have been itching to come here to pick out some good stuff to make Noah's baby food. Today was the perfect day: Joe is off work, the weather is gorgeous, and Fridays are not as packed as Saturdays so we could take Noah's stroller without feeling like we were in the way. Here-- take a look at some of our little jaunt:

{just inside the market}
{the stately, pretty outside}
{looking down one of the streets of the Soulard district}
{the busy, crazy, indoor food stands}{the butcher}
{Noah, just chillin' in his stroller}
{my boys. Joe looks REALLY interested, right? And see Noah's legs? He like to ride in his stroller this way.}{just a portion of the abundant fruit and veggie stalls. I love the clothespinned, handwritten signs}
{our haul:}
For $18, we got--
4 bananas
2 large heads of broccoli
1 lb. of green beans
1 eggplant
5 pears
2 avocados
4 peaches
3 golden delicious apples
4 yams
2 lil' cases of blueberries

Not bad! And much of it will be steamed/baked/mashed/blended into little frozen cubes for Noah, but I might just have to nibble on some if this myself. In non-pureed form. Yum!

{this little bird whistle came from Grandma and Grandpa (Joe's parents) in Korea-- you put a little water in it and it trills a lovely little sound. Noah loves it. It was on my stove in my kitchen when I was taking produce pictures, and it begged to be included. No reason.}

  1. What a haul for $18! I am too jealous. Oh, and Allie also rides in her stroller like that. Looks uncomfy to me but I lost my bendiness long ago.

  3. The disadvantage of most of the farmers' markets here is that they are usually only open on Saturday mornings, and by the time I get off work, they are closed. *sigh*
    I miss farmers' markets... I would love to make a trip to Soulard's sometime when I'm in town again... it reminds me of the markets I fell in love with in England...

    fun times.

  4. I haven't taken Bella to Soulard yet, but it has been on my list of things to do all summer. Summer's almost over so I better get on that! I'm so jealous you made it there. Did Noah love all the activity? The market is one of my favorite places in the STL. I buy a ton from the spice market. Glad you enjoyed your day!

  5. Are you kidding? I literally just walked in the door from getting my produce stash from Soulard! That would have been so fun to run into you, I'm bummed. What are the chances? That's only the second time I've been there in about a year as well. Agreed--the weather is gorgeous today, isn't it? Happy day.

  6. Oh, and I was going to say: I was looking at some signs in a window for funnel cakes and thought 'That's something Emily would take a picture of'. It wasn't that exact funnel cake sign, but isn't that weird? The powers at be are saying we must get together soon :)

  7. GOsh this makes me miss St. Louis!!! :( I love Soulard! Your grub looks yummy and I used to have one of those whistles when I was wee but it was cheap and plastic, not pretty like that.

  10. It's so cute how most babies love to prop their feet up in the stroller, like they are queen/king of the street!

    Cute pics (as always)

    We're excited to come and visit next weekend!
